This year there are seven candidates running for three of the six RMT positions on the CMTBC Board. The positions carry a two-year term, from April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022. Candidates’ names, photographs, and statements have been posted on the 2020 Board Election page.
For the first time in CMTBC’s history, the election will be conducted by online electronic voting. The election will be administered and hosted by a specialist third-party provider, Simply Voting Inc. RMTs’ ballots will be secure and confidential, and CMTBC will receive only the final vote tallies from Simply Voting. Electronic voting allows for new features such as randomly-ordered ballots. CMTBC also hopes that the convenience of online voting may encourage a higher rate of participation by RMTs. Voting will open on January 31, 2020 and will close on February 28, 2020.
Elected members of the Board bring their professional perspective to the role, and join the Board’s three public representatives (appointed by the provincial government) in working together to ensure that CMTBC fulfills its mandate to act in the public interest. See Board Roles & Responsibilities.
The upcoming Board term is likely to prove particularly interesting, given the government’s announced proposals to streamline health profession regulation in BC by combining the regulation of several health professions – including massage therapy – into a new combined “College of Health and Care Professions of British Columbia”. However, for as long as regulation continues in its present form, the Board will oversee the strategic governance of CMTBC, which promotes ethical and competent practice and ensures that BC RMTs put the safety and best interest of patients first at all times.
