Addressing Indigenous cultural safety, humility, and anti-racism is a commitment that is shared by all BC Health Regulators, including CMTBC.

Background

In 2020, the BC Ministry of Health commissioned a review of Indigenous-specific racism in the provincial health care system, which resulted in the release of a summary and full report entitled In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous-Specific Racism and Discrimination in B.C. Health Care. The In Plain Sight report is a deep examination into the problem of Indigenous-specific racism in BC’s health care system. 

Commitment to action

To mark the second National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2022, CMTBC’s Board made a commitment to action, which acknowledged that intergenerational trauma and abuse cannot be corrected until each of us – individuals and organizations – understand why we have a role to play in changing how we care.

In conjunction with the commitment to action, CMTBC released a new Cultural Safety & Humility section on the College’s website. The Cultural Safety and Humility section was created as a resource for registrants to support meaningful engagement and learning with respect to Indigenous cultural safety, humility, and anti-racism.

CMTBC is currently developing a Cultural Safety, Humility, and Anti-racism Standard of Practice. The development of a new standard follows the work done by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC). Collaboratively, BCCNM and CPSBC developed and introduced an Indigenous Cultural Safety, Cultural Humility, and Anti-racism Standard of Practice, which sets out clear expectations for their registrants to foster culturally safe and anti-racist health care for Indigenous patients.

Consultation with RMTs

CMTBC is inviting RMTs, and in particular, Indigenous RMTs and RMTs who provide treatment for Indigenous patients, to participate in a Cultural Safety, Humility, and Anti-Racism Standard Advisory Group.

Participation requires each RMT to be available for one videoconference meeting, which will take place on May 11, 2023, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.  In addition to attending the meeting, participants will be required to set aside up to two hours in advance of the meeting for review of meeting materials and background information.  An honorarium will be given to RMTs for their involvement in the advisory group.

If there is significant interest, not all of those who apply may be able to participate. Only applicants selected to participate will be contacted.
