The College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia (CMTBC) regulates the profession of massage therapy in BC. The College acts on behalf of the public to ensure that registered massage therapists (RMTs) in BC deliver safe, ethical and effective treatment.

Update on 2017 registration renewal and Cycle 10 continuing education reporting

At the end of 2016, two important deadlines passed for RMTs:

  • November 30, 2016 was the deadline to report required continuing education credits to CMTBC for the two-year quality assurance Cycle 10 that ended October 31, 2016.
  • December 15, 2016 was the deadline for renewing active or inactive registration with CMTBC for 2017.

The majority of RMTs completed these requirements within the deadlines. CMTBC thanks those registrants for their efforts in meeting these obligations on time.

However, a significant number of RMTs were unable to meet one or both of these deadlines. Sections 50 to 52 of CMTBC’s Bylaws outline conditions and requirements for registration renewal that RMTs must meet. RMTs who do not meet those conditions and requirements are required to pay a late renewal fee.

CMTBC acknowledges that there may be special circumstances that have prevented some RMTs from meeting the registration renewal deadline. The Bylaws outline options for the College’s Registrar to waive, reduce, or reimburse late renewal fees for RMTs in such circumstances: As stated in section 53 of the Bylaws: “Despite sections 50 to 52, the Registrar may waive, reduce or reimburse any fee … under one or more of those sections if, in the opinion of the Registrar, undue hardship or other special circumstances exist in relation to the Registrant or former Registrant that warrant waiver, reduction or reimbursement.”

CMTBC is also aware that a number of RMTs have experienced technical issues with the CMTBC Online Portal. The College’s highest priority project for 2017 is implementing a new system to replace the current portal. As announced in October 2016 in the CMTBC Newsletter, a process is underway to identify and implement a new registrant database, online portal, and information management system that is more user-friendly, easier to work with, and more useful to RMTs.

RMTs who still need to renew registration for 2017 should do so as soon as possible in the CMTBC Online Portal. CECs for Cycle 10 should be sent by email to or by fax to 604.736.6500. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact CMTBC at or connect to Registrar Eric Wredenhagen directly at If you are requesting a waiver of a late fee on the basis of undue hardship or special circumstances, please attach any available documentation substantiating your request.

Thank you to registrants for your patience and perseverance, and all the best for 2017.
