CEOs appointed for new multi-profession health regulatory colleges

As part of the process of preparation for amalgamation on June 28, 2024 of four BC health profession regulatory colleges, including CMTBC, the CEO of the new amalgamated college has been appointed.

Carin Plischke, currently Registrar and CEO of the College of Occupational Therapists of BC (COTBC), has been appointed CEO of the new multi-profession health regulatory college. Carin was appointed after an extensive recruitment and selection process. She is an Occupational Therapist by training, and worked for the Ministry of Health prior to her current COTBC role. She also has previous governance experience as COTBC’s Board Chair.

Eric Wredenhagen will continue to serve as Registrar and CEO of CMTBC until amalgamation, as will the registrars of the three colleges amalgamating with CMTBC: College of Chiropractors of BC, College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC, and College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of BC. Effective June 28, 2024, Carin will assume the full-time role of CEO of the newly-amalgamated college.

Seven other BC health profession regulatory colleges will also amalgamate to form a separate new college on June 28, 2024. Dianne Millette, currently the Registrar of the College of Physical Therapists of BC (CPTBC), has been appointed CEO of this new college that will be created with the amalgamation of the following existing colleges: College of Dietitians of BC, College of Occupational Therapists of BC, College of Opticians of BC, College of Optometrists of BC, College of Physical Therapists of BC, College of Psychologists of BC, and College of Speech and Hearing Health Professionals of BC.

Before the amalgamation date, the new CEOs will focus on establishing each new college’s staffing and culture to ensure continuity of regulatory operations, business and budget planning, and relationships with partners.

Proposed new college names

The Ministry of Health has proposed the following names for the new amalgamated colleges: College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia (the college to be created with amalgamation of CMTBC and three other colleges) and College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (the college to be created with amalgamation of seven colleges). The deadline for feedback on the names was January 12, 2024. CMTBC will communicate the new colleges’ names after the Ministry has made a final decision.

Amalgamation background

Amalgamation is part of the Ministry of Health’s multi-year initiative to modernize BC’s health profession regulatory framework. Amalgamation of health profession regulatory colleges has been anticipated since a report by Harry Cayton, CBE, released by the Ministry of Health in 2019, and the 2020 report of the Steering Committee on Modernization of Health Professional Regulation. Allan Seckel is the Amalgamation Lead.

CMTBC will continue to communicate updates in news stories as the preparation progresses for the June 28, 2024 amalgamations.
