CMTBC’s Quality Assurance (QA) program works in concert with the practice standards to ensure that each RMT provides the public with a minimum standard of care. While this is an important and necessary goal, CMTBC is now looking for ways to build the concept of Quality Improvement (QI) into the QA program.
You are invited to respond to a survey that addresses QI instead of minimum standards – the five-minute survey is open until midnight on Sunday, October 25th, 2020.
While ensuring a minimum standard of care is an important regulatory goal, RMTs are lifelong learners who continually assess and improve their practice. Like all professionals, RMTs continue to build expertise over time. For CMTBC, this raises an important question: can QA be about more than just requiring a minimum standard? Can there also be a way to support and encourage each registrant’s development over the course of their career, to help them be the best RMT they can be?
Regulators are learning that building competence across a career span is about more than completing continuing education credits. Competence is reflected in RMT behaviour with patients. It evolves over time, in the context of each RMT’s practice. It is ongoing and does not have a fixed end point. This new goal, QI, supplements traditional QA, which can be thought of as a floor, by allowing for a continually rising ceiling.
The first step in building a new QA/QI program will be to establish a Framework for Career-Span Competence that is relevant to RMTs. As a beginning, CMTBC requests your participation in a short (5-minute) registrant-wide survey. Please respond – your input is critical at this early stage as we work on the concepts that illustrate career-span evolution.
Once the Framework is fully developed, we will design processes that support ongoing registrant development and quality improvement.
