Obtaining CECs in Cycle 13

First 10 CECs

All RMTs are required to complete CMTBC’s online course on the newly revised Code of Ethics and the new Practice Environment Standard. View information about the online course and how to enroll on the CMTBC Online Courses page. Successful completion of the online course by October 31, 2021 results in 10 CECs applied to Cycle 13 requirements.

Please note: unlike Cycle 13 requirements that must be completed by October 31, 2022, the Code of Ethics & Practice Environment Standard online course must be completed by October 31, 2021. Course completion by this date is a requirement for 2022 registration renewal. See below for a summary of deadlines.

Additional CECs (refer to chart above to determine how many CECs you need)

RMTs receive CECs for completing approved continuing education (CE) activities in two categories:

  • Evidence Informed Practice (EIP), new in Cycle 13, and/or
  • Cycle 12 categories continued in Cycle 13 (application for approval closes on September 6, 2021).

The Cycle 13 Criteria for Approval of Continuing Education Activities page explains the difference between the categories.

Evidence Informed Practice (EIP) activities – new in Cycle 13 – are awarded 10 CECs. Any CE activity that meets the criteria for approval of EIP activities is awarded 10 CECs. There is no distinction between PD and PE activities in the EIP category. EIP activities can be delivered in person, online, via webinar, or a combination of delivery methods.

Search for approved continuing education activities in Cycle 13 on the Cycle 13 – Approved Continuing Education Activities page.

Cycle 12 categories that continue into Cycle 13 are either PD (professional development) or PE (practical education) and vary in the number of CECs awarded for approved activities. There is no limit to the number of PD or PE activities that can be applied to Cycle 13 requirements.

Credits obtained in Cycle 12 cannot be applied towards Cycle 13 CEC requirements.

Continuing education credits (CECs) requirements in Cycle 12: November 1, 2018 – October 31, 2020*

* CMTBC Bylaws stipulate that registrants complete continuing education (CE) activities to obtain required continuing education credits (CECs) in two-year cycles. As an accommodation for challenges caused by COVID-19 restrictions, CMTBC adjusted the deadline to complete Cycle 12 CE activities to October 31, 2021.

How many CECs do you need in Cycle 12?

The Registrant Portal provides updated information on CECs via the Registrant Dashboard. In the Dashboard, select “Continuing Education (CE) – Cycle 12” and then  “CE Progress Summary” to view how many CECs you have accumulated in Cycle 12 and how many more you need to obtain.

RMTs who hold Practising status for 12 months or more of Cycle 12 (November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2020) are required to accumulate 24 CECs. Of those 24 CECS, 10 must be attained from completion of CMTBC’s online course requirement in Cycle 12, the Boundaries Standard of Practice & Consent Standard of Practice course. All RMTs were required to complete this course by October 31, 2020.

RMTs who hold Practising status for less than 12 months of Cycle 12 (November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2020) – including RMTs who are Non-practising for all of Cycle 12 – are required to accumulate 12 CECs. Of those 12 CECs, 10 must be attained from completion of CMTBC’s Boundaries & Consent course.

College Bylaws provide an exemption for new RMTs in Cycle 12 (see table below).

RMTs need to complete required activities by October 31, 2021. Failure to complete required continuing education by that date will result in a non-compliance fee, in an amount set by CMTBC’s Bylaws

Obtaining CECs in Cycle 12

Beyond CECs received for completing the online course requirement in Cycle 12, RMTs receive CECs for professional development (PD) and practical education (PE). The difference between the categories relates to the criteria for course approval; both categories are equal in terms of meeting College requirements.

There is no limit to the number of PD or PE credits that can be accumulated in Cycle 12. All 14 required CECs (or a smaller required amount that depends on your status – see chart above) can be from PD or PE activities.

RMTs should confirm on their Dashboard in the Registrant Portal, how many CECs they require in Cycle 12.
